School Concert in DRs Concert house

In cooporation with the Danish National Radio, Nordic Music Days 2010 invite pupils from schools all over the country to attend an exciting concert featuring the Danish Radio Sinfonietta and the Danish National Vocal Ensemble. The concert will take place on Friday, September 10th at 12.00 and 14.00. The two ensembles will be playing contemporary music from each of the five Nordic Countries: Denmark, Finland, Norway, Iceland and Sweden.

Throughout the year, pupils across Denmark have been listening to and working with works by Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen (DK), Kent Olofsson (SE), Håkon Berge (NO), Veli-Matti Puumala (FI) og Haukur Tómasson (IS) via a brand new educational material written especially for Nordic Music Days 2010.

Through hands-on assignments and listening exercises, the pupils obtain good knowledge of the music, which gives them excellent prerequisites for experiencing the live version in the Danish National Radio’s new concert hall. The concert and the educational materials are both free of charge.

The five works of music are very different and could motivate interdisciplinary collaboration.

Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen’s work KOHEJRE is inspired by a poem (Cattle Egret from Translations from the Natural World, 1992) by the Australian poet Les Murray:

Our quick beaks pincer them, one and one,
those crisp of winnow, fats of air
the pick of chirrup - we haggle them down

Kent Olofsson’s work CHLADNI´S BOW refers to the phenomenon that a metal plate covered in a thin layer of sand vibrates and creates little patterns when it is played with a bow from a violin. Inspired by the German physicist and musician Ernst Chladni – Chladnis’ soundsculptures.

Experience for yourself …NENNSOMT SPINNER… by Håkon Berge, MEMORIAL FRAGMENTS by Veli-Matti Puumala, and the interludes for GUDRUNS 4. SANG by Haukur Tómasson.

This school concert is a contribution to a strengthening of music teaching in municipal primary and lower-secondary education as the project is a bridge builder between artistic and educational worlds. Also, it presents teaching models that can strengthen children and youth’s knowledge of and their work with new music, both as listeners and creative collaborators.

We are pleased to be able to present this offer to the schools, and we hope that it will prove to be a good introduction to working with new music for both children and teachers.

Also, read about the project Meet the Musicians – where shool children can meet with a group of musicians from the two Danish National Radio ensembles, before the concert.

Educational Materials and the School Concert project is made by the festival management in cooperation with senior lecturer Else Marie Okkels.
